INTRODUCTION

The 10th ISDEV International Development Management Conference is the tenth of a series of initiative to encourage related research in Islamic social sciences perspective, this time in the area of Falak Syar’ie (Islamic Astronomy). This conference is a continuation of the 9th ISDEV International Development Management Conference with the theme: Islamic Asset Management which was held at Universiti Sains Malaysia on 8th –9th  December 2015.

The conference aims to achieve the following objectives:
  • To provide a platform and opportunities for practitioners, managers, scholars, researchers, academicians, graduate students and others from all over the world to engage on an intellectual discourse on Falak Syar’ie
  • To present the latest research findings related to all issues Falak Syar’ie, domestically and internationally, that relate to the issues, challenges, prospects, transformation of Falak Syar’ie into a more effective and dynamic field of study and as well as a more vibrant industry;
  • To explore new ideas and issues on Falak Syar’ie especially those that could contribute towards the knowledge about Islamic Astronomy that is able to lead to the maximisation of benefits for the ummah

RATIONALE

There are two terms of Falak being used which is Falak and Falak Syar’ieFalak literally means and widely known as Astronomy while Falak Syar’ie can be defined as Islamic Astronomy. Unfortunately, there were some confusion and misunderstanding about the term of Falak Syar‘ie. Some said that Falak Syar‘ie is only focusing on everything which relates to Ibadah among the Muslims.The narrowing scope of Falak Syar‘ie can be seen as it is only being used to determine prayer timing, establishing taqwim/calendar and Qibla’ direction. In reality the current research on Falak Syar‘ie has been done from different thought and perspectives among the academician, and astronomy practitioners such as Islamic Jurisprudence, astronomy, physic, social sciences, and ethnography.

Today, different perspectives have been carried by different academicians, and astronomy practitioners which related to the area of Falak Syar‘ie. Among the Falak Syar‘ie they were emphasizing the research and studies on astronomy in the view of Shariah or Fiqh which is different from the astronomy whereby they are more focusing in terms of theory or practicality in the view of Science.

This conference attempts to seek the answers to these problems, as well as to create the integration between the Islamic Scholars and Astronomy Scholars on the knowledge of Falak Syar‘ie, from the current level to a more highly productive level.

Through this conference it is hoped to be able to blend new, innovative and practical minds, unlike the common stereotype, reiterative and rhetorical ones. Thus, quality papers and discussions expected from this conference will be successfully produced.
